Gujjar Kings

 

According to Sanskrit Language, the word “Gurjar” is known as “destroyer of enemy”: “Gur” means “enemy” and “jar” means “destroyer”).

In the 18th century, several gurjar kings were in power. According to the Imperial Gazetteer of India, the Gujjars & Muslim Rajputs proved the most threatning to the British forces in the Bulandshahr Area.

According to Wikipedia, the British used the word “turbulent” for all castes which opposed to the British rule. They used derogatory words so that the reputation of that caste goes down.

The wikipedia records further state that the British classified Gurjars & others as criminal tribes due to their strong participation in the revolt of 1857.

This Brave community has a rich past & Gujjar/Gurjars should be proud of their existence.

In India, the Gujjars are mainly found in Punjab( Balachaur, Ludhiana, Patiala, Jalandhar, Amritsar and inner regions), Haryana, Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra. According to wikipedia, the name for the state of Gujarat has been derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Gurjar’.

The Gurjars/Gujjars were no doubt a remarkable people spread from Kashmir to Gujarat and Maharashtra, who gave an identity to Gujarat.

The Gurjars plundered gunpowder and ammunition from the British and their allies. The British ethnographer, William Crooke, described that Gurjars seriously impeded the operations of the British Army before Delhi.
